Critias and Timaeus:
The epic of Atlantis begins, very literally, with the two famous dialogues of Plato, Timaeus and Critias. These dialogues are probably the only known written records which speak of Atlantis’ existence. They also mention that the civilization of Atlantis was lost and was never to be found again. Many people, including scholars and historians believe that his tale is completely fictitious and that it was probably a metaphor used to illustrate something that the great philosopher, Plato, wanted to communicate.
Other people also believe that the tale was inspired by the catastrophic events that may have destroyed the Minoan civilization. However, there are many people who still believe that the story was completely true and that a place called Atlantis definitely existed.
The Myth of Atlantis:
The myth of Atlantis says that, more than 11000 years ago, there existed a very powerful and noble race that dwelled in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean. All the inhabitants of this island possessed enormous amounts of wealth which came due to the excellent natural resources throughout the island. The island was a major hub for commerce and trade. Its rulers held authority over the island and also big chunks of what is now Africa and Europe.
Atlantis was also supposed to be the territory of the Greek god, Poseidon, who was the god of the sea. The myth goes that Poseidon managed to fall in love with some mortal woman and, therefore built a house that was atop a hill on the island of Atlantis. He also surrounded this house with huge rings of water in order to guard her. The woman, Cleito, gave birth to 5 sets of twins who went on to become the rulers of Atlantis. The island was then divided numerous portions, each portion to be ruled by a single person. The eldest brother was given a hold over the central hill where he built a temple consisting of a huge golden statue of his father, Poseidon. It was in this temple that all the ten rulers of Atlantis would come and discuss the formation and implementation of various laws and pay tribute to their divine father.
Description: In his works Critias and Timaeus, Plato mentions the existence of the lost kingdom of Atlantis. He says that the kingdom was a very powerful one and had a lot of hold over the island and big portions of Africa and Europe.
