Platonic Scholarship

Plato’s thoughts are often compared to those of his most devoted and famous pupil, Aristotle. Aristotle’s reputation completely eclipsed that of Plato and all the scholars began to refer to him as “the Philosopher”. But the Byzantine Empire continued to study Plato’s concept. The scholars of the middle ages neither had any sort of access to the works written by Plato nor were they that accomplished in the Greek knowledge to read the scripts. The original versions of Plato’s writings were eventually lost to the Western civilization. However, they were brought back to Greece from the city of Constantinople, before it fell, by George Plethon. The medieval scholars could understand Plato’s writings only through the translations in Latin and Arabic. The scholars who translated these works also expanded the ancient texts by adding long commentaries and perceptions of Aristotle’s and Plato’s works.

It was finally during the renaissance that Plato’s works became popular in the West once more. Numerous great philosophers and scientists of the early modern ages believed that Plato’s ideas could be used to develop modern arts and sciences to a great extent. By the conclusion of the nineteenth century, Plato’s deserved reputation was completely restored, if not more, at least at par with that of his pupil’s.

After that, many renowned Western scientists have been drawing ideas and inspiration from Plato’s works. His influence has surely been very strong in the field of science and mathematics. It has certainly advanced a great deal since the reversing of Aristotle’s famous declaration of separation from the Platonic Academy. The declaration stated that, Plato is my enemy, but mendacity is a bigger enemy. Famous scientist, Albert Einstein took references from Plato’s thoughts on immaculate reality which highlights the fake appearances of his objections about Niels Bohr’s probable picture of the material universe and his thoughts about quantum physics.

Description: Platonic scholarship, in the last 2-3 centuries, has increased in value compared to what it was in the medieval ages. People have no started realizing the significance of his thoughts and have started implementing them in daily life.
