The term “Platonism” is something that was coined by scholars in order to exemplify the intellectual repercussions of denying the reality of the materialistic world, just like Socrates did during his time. In many of Plato’s dialogues, Socrates contradicts the common man’s idea about what is real and what is not. Most of the common people take it for granted that anything they feel with the help of their sensations is real. Socrates appears to be very agitated because of this common idea. He declares that the average common man is heavily mistaken to think that everything they can touch, feel, smell, see or hear is real. To coin his words, he says that these people live without the special divine inspiration which he and others similar to him possess.
Socrates’ doctrine suggested that everything that a person can feel is not real and this was the reason why people couldn’t accept his ideologies. They believed that he completely contradicted common sense. In his metaphors that were penned down by Plato in the Republic, Socrates declared that each and every person who sees things with his eyes is blind because the invisible world is far more intelligent than the obviously visible world that other people see.
According to Plato’s Theory of Forms, every physical object and event is a mere shadow of its original form. They tend to exist only as long as they perfectly portray their original form. Socrates also mentioned that pure justice always exists, though it is still unclear where, and his final trial would be a despicable version of it.
The term “Metaphysics” is derived from the fact that Plato’s student, Aristotle mused about divine reality after his own lecture notes about the discourse on nature was written. The term is also used keeping Plato in context. Platonic metaphysics is believed to be Socrates’ bifurcation of reality in which reality is divided into the irreconcilable and battling domains of the spiritual and material worlds.
This theory has played a huge part in the construction of the foundation of modern Western culture.
