Born in Tyre, Porphyry who was also known as Porphyrios went off to study in Athens. After the studies, he joined the Neoplatonic group founded by Plotinus in Rome. Plotinus was the one to rescue Porphyry from a state of depression which had almost led him to commit suicide. Plotinus taught philosophy to Porphyry after this incident. In the 301 BC, The Enneads, a more systematic and refined collection which consists of writings and works of Plotinus, was completed by him.
