Zeno of Citium

Zeno of Citium studied under the shelter of his teacher, Crates of Thebes. Mnaseas, a merchant by profession was the father of Citium. Even at the age of 42, Zeno himself was a merchant like his father. Legend has it that, on one fine merchant journey, Zeno’s ship was completely in ruins and due to that he landed up in Athens. He approached philosophers in Athens and gradually he started liking philosophy.

Xenocrates

A student of Plato, Xenocrates was an ancient Greek philosopher. He had joined Plato’s academy which was situated in Athens in the year 376 BC. When Plato started his journey to Syracuse in the year 367 BC, Xenocrates was the one to accompany him. After the death of Plato in 347 BC, Xenocrates left Athens along with Aristotle and went to Assos and stayed there for as long as five years where both of them were invited.

Thales

Thales is a Greek philosopher and is known as being one among the Seven Wise Men. He is basically renowned for his theory about water which states it as being the essential element of matter and also that the Earth is a flat-shaped disk which floats on an extensive spread of water.  Diogenes Laërtius, the historian from Greece has placed the Thales’ birth in the year 624 bc. Thales’ death is supposed to have happened somewhere between the years 548 BC and 545 bc when he was approximately 78 years old.

Socrates

Socrates is an ancient Greek philosopher credited amongst the other philosophers for finding the western philosophy. He is especially recognized for his contribution in the writings of his students, Plato and Xenophon. Through the famous writings of Plato’s dialogues, Socrates has made a significant contribution to the subject of modern ethics. Born in 469 BC, Socrates is well known for his ideas of Socratic irony and Socratic Method.

Prodicus

Prodicus was a Greek philosopher born in 465 BC. He went to Athens as an ambassador from Ceos and was among he philosophers present during the sophistic movement. Prodicus came to be knows as a very good teacher and speaker in Athens. He used to teach his pupils and bring about awareness in them about domestic affairs as well as other civil happenings. In his teaching curriculum, Prodicus always laid an emphasis on ethics.
